Ethiopian National Defense Force foils planned attack on mega dam
The Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) has foiled planned attacks against employees working on the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
At least 30 gun men were killed in a counter offensive and more than 100 others surrendered to the defense force amid the fighting held in three places.
The fighting took place on Saturday as the gunmen were approaching Ethiopia’s grand dam in three directions namely Gemed, Teyiba and Gizen areas in Sherkole district of Benishangul-Gumuz regional state.
The gun men confessed that they had taken military training in neighboring Sudan with Egypt armed them with modern weapons. The plan was to disrupt the construction of the dam by carrying out attacks on the workers.
Meanwhile, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in a report announced that a person was burnt to death in Guba district, Metekel zone of Benishangul- Gumuz regional state a week ago.
After a quick investigation carried out on Saturday, the commission said the person was thrown to fire along with other dead people whose identities are known yet.
The commission said the crime was committed on March 5, 2022 in the presence of security officers including members of the national defense forces.
The video displaying the burning of the person has become viral on social media since March 11, 2022 and caused anger and broke the hearts of people watching it.
